Job Description

Our new School of Veterinary Medicine is the first facility of its kind in Lancashire. As we prepare to welcome our first ever students, we’re looking for ambitious individuals to help us train a new generation of veterinary professionals who are passionate about animal welfare.

We’re seeking to appoint 2 qualified practitioners in the field of farm animal management and biosciences. Working in state-of-the-art facilities alongside an international team of experienced veterinarians and animal scientists, you’ll lead on designing and delivering innovative teaching methods, materials and assessments, with a particular focus on farm animal husbandry and associated biosciences. You’ll also provide outstanding support to students at every stage of their journey.

Whether you’re based in practice or in higher education, your valuable skills will help us transform students into industry-ready graduates. You will have sound knowledge and practical experience of animal and/or veterinary sciences, including farm animal production systems, nutrition and physiology, plus associated technical and practical skills.

For the Veterinary Lecturer level, if you have no teaching experience you will be given access to workshops and other learning activities which will accelerate your development as an academic.

In the development of this new area of academic delivery at UCLan, there will be the scope and expectation to bring forward energy and innovation in teaching practice, as well as developing the post holder’s academic strengths.

  • Key competencies

    To organise, manage, undertake, and assess teaching at the UG and potentially PG level in animal and veterinary sciences, with a particular focus on farm animal husbandry and associated biosciences.  

    In the development of this new area of academic delivery at UCLan, there will be the scope and expectation to bring forward energy and innovation in teaching practice, as well as developing the post holder’s academic strengths.  

  • Responsibilities + duties
    1. To develop and deliver teaching and assessment using engaging teaching, learning and assessment methods and technologies, including via VLE and other digital media, and animal contact and industry settings. 
    2. Contribute to the assessment process for students including enhancement, setting, invigilation, marking and moderation of the student work, individually or collectively as part of a programme team in accordance with University and School quality assurance procedures. 
    3. To contribute to the delivery of the curriculum relevant to experience and qualifications as part of a team including animal contact and clinical assessment of patients. 
    4. To act as module lead for relevant modules and ensure that content is appropriate, up to date and comprehensive to facilitate successful achievement of agreed learning outcomes. 
    5. To contribute to achieving the academic objectives of the School of Veterinary Medicine through scholarly activity, research outputs and knowledge transfer activities 
    6. To contribute to the further development of the School of Veterinary Medicine course provision as well as undertaking strategic development responsibilities relating to inter-professionalism  
    7. Design  and  develop  effective  and  inclusive  learning  materials  and assessments to align with programme and module descriptors 
    8. To undertake administrative duties relevant to module leadership (administer course registers, assessment records, learning programmes and other records) and supporting student retention, and engagement, identifying and assisting struggling students. 
    9. To support and develop processes to enhance the student voice and integrate student wellbeing into course delivery 
    10. Engage with the recruitment of students onto courses and provide appropriate advice on progression and career opportunities. To participate in the student admission process: open days; recruitment; clearing; and selection events for all campus sites.  
    11. Contribute to development and delivery of CPD, PPD or degree courses and programmes 
    12. To develop and consolidate contacts with industry/employers, university partners  and other external organisations, particularly to maximise opportunities for interprofessional interactions and education. 
    13. Carry out other duties commensurate with the level of the post as outlined by the Head of School.  
  • Candidate Suitability/Qualifications

    Good honours degree (or equivalent) in a veterinary, animal science  or agricultural discipline. Higher education teaching qualification or professional (e.g. PGCHE, FHEA or equivalent), or a commitment to complete within one year of appointment.
