    Organisational Background

We have been saving animals for almost 200 years. We were founded in a London coffee shop in 1824. The men present knew they were creating the world’s first animal welfare charity, but they couldn’t have imagined the size and shape that the charity would become today.

Back then we were the SPCA – Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Royal patronage followed in 1837 and Queen Victoria gave permission to add the royal R in 1840, making us the RSPCA as we’re known worldwide today.

    Organisation Aims and Mission

Our vision is a world where all animals are respected and treated with kindness and compassion. Our mission is to ensure animals have a good life by rescuing and caring for those in need, by advocating on behalf of all animals and by inspiring everyone to treat them with compassion and respect. Our strategy to 2030 will build on this strong platform as we look towards our 200th anniversary in 2024 and the years that follow.

  • What makes your organization a great place to work?

Working at the RSPCA means you are part of a passionate and experienced team, and you share one goal of working together for animal welfare. Our teams get to positively influence the lives of animals on a daily basis. Our teams get to decide upon the best welfare outcome for their patients and can be updated on how they are getting on as they progress.

The RSPCA is working hard to be a great place to work and we are keen to explore flexible working options and appreciate the importance of a good work balance with a 35 hour week as standard, and a generous holiday allowance and pension.

It is an exciting time to work here. Being part of the RSPCA will often allow people to grow their skills and experience, and where desired progress their career internally with the opportunity to work across different teams and departments.

  • Describe an ideal employee at your organization

Our ideal employee would be welfare focused with the ability to work creatively and pragmatically to find the best solutions for the animals in their care without losing sight of the big picture. Someone with the ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team but who is prepared to take responsibility and make decisions where necessary.
