Organisational background
The practice was started in the 1920s by Edgar Messervy, who was later joined by his brother Albert. Albert went on to become a Professor in Veterinary Medicine and taught for many years at Bristol Veterinary School. Throughout that time and after returning to Jersey, he played a huge role in progressing and promoting the Jersey Cow on the world stage.
Family connections continued. Charles Gruchy (senior) became a Partner in the Practice, known as David Place Veterinary Hospital, to be joined in 1979 by his son – the present Charles Gruchy! Ben Linnell, who joined the Practice in 1992, was Albert Messervy’s step-grandson.
As with many general practices in the UK, the original mainstay of veterinary work – farm animal practice – diminished throughout the eighties and nineties, and small animal work became the dominating requirement. In response to this, the Practice relocated from its cramped premises in David Place to Georgetown in 1998. A purpose-built facility was constructed, and the Practice became the New Era Veterinary Hospital.
Since opening the hospital has grown and grown. Peter Haworth and Ian Cox became the first RCVS Certificate holders in the channel Islands in Surgery and Medicine respectively and this has progressed the practice and care. Now with two branch surgeries to lighten the first opinion work on the hospital and a dedicated physio suite at one of these.
Organisation aims & mission
The NEVH vision is to provide the highest level of veterinary treatment to our patients while maintaining excellent, compassionate client care and communication.
As an RCVS Accredited Small Animal Hospital we are able to position ourselves at a level that is comparable to the best first opinion general practice within the UK. Clients should feel that we are providing exceptional service to their pets and giving good value for money.
We have a responsibility to our staff to run the business efficiently and effectively in order to provide them with an enjoyable working environment and appropriate rewards, such that they are keen to work hard and, in turn, have a good level of job satisfaction.
Whilst there is competition on the island, we believe that nobody else is able to offer the same consistency and quality of care as the NEVH group. As a private healthcare provider, we must be aware that our clients have a choice so every client and patient matters.
