What’s one of the most impactful ways to influence animal welfare at scale? Being a Named Veterinary Surgeon is one possible answer

Two NVS’s are needed so register now to hear the team from Red Kite Veterinary Consultants talk about what new additions to their team can expect from such a role. You might expect that would include being in a lab all day long, but that’s not the case. Working alongside research organisations in a hybrid role, it might just be one of the most impactful and flexible veterinary jobs. So while some lab or research experience would be useful, it’s definitely not essential if you have a few years of solid clinical experience.

Join Ginny, Alasdair and Maggie as we talk about

    • How the work is challenging and directly impacts welfare
    • How Red Kite manage hybrid work, from home and on-site and how that enables work-life fit for their team
    • What makes Red Kite the “Best team I’ve ever worked with” and how you could become part of that team.
    • The intensive training during your induction period.

Register now to reserve a place and join the conversation. There’ll be plenty of time for chat and networking afterwards as well.

    About the Team:

    Maggie Lloyd

Hi, I’m Maggie and I’m a 1989 Cambridge graduate. I’m the Director of Red Kite Veterinary Consultants Ltd, and I’ve been working in the lab animal field for over 30 years.

    Alasdair Gallie

I’m originally from Ireland. I graduated in 2011 from the University of Nottingham and worked in small animal practice for 5 years in England, Ireland, and Australia. I joined Red Kite Veterinary Consultants in 2017 and currently work as a Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS) in London.

    Ginnie Fisher

I’m celebrating 20 years of being a vet this year as a 2003 Bristol grad! I started out in small animal practice and exotics work before doing a Master’s degree. Since then, I’ve worked in the animal research field (with occasional locum work in practice) and joined RKV in 2020.

Dr. Sonja Olson grew up with her human and animal family members mostly in Maryland, USA. She graduated from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine with a focus on exotic animal and conservation medicine. Her professional path led to over 25 years of practicing clinical small animal and exotic emergency medicine in both private and corporate practice environments in Virginia and in Florida. Natasha Janke (she/her)

Dr. Natasha Janke is a postdoctoral fellow in the Relationship-Centred Veterinary Medicine research group at the Ontario Veterinary College and a sessional lecturer in the OVC Medical Communications Program. Her research interests are driven by a desire to understand how social interactions in veterinary medicine impact clinical outcomes. Natasha’s interest in veterinary medicine led her to complete her MSc (2017) and PhD (2021) in Veterinary Epidemiology at the Ontario Veterinary College. During her doctoral work, she used mixed methods to understand the current state of information exchange and clinical decision-making during companion animal veterinary visits. Following her PhD, Natasha worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Veterinary Communication for Professional Excellence program at Colorado State University (2021-2022), where she investigated the impact of a 15-month in-practice clinical communication training program. Natasha is currently conducting research to identify organizational practices that veterinary hospitals can implement to enhance team functioning.

    Kat Sutherland (she/her)

Dr. Kat Sutherland is a postdoctoral fellow in the Relationship-Centred Veterinary Medicine research group at the OVC. Kat’s research interests are motivated by wanting to understand how relationships in veterinary medicine impact pet owners’ uptake of and adherence to nutritional and weight management recommendations, and how veterinary-client communication can be enhanced to improve the quality of life for pets with excess weight. She completed her MSc in animal nutrition prior to pursuing her PhD in Population Medicine. Her PhD research explored pet weight-related communication in small animal veterinary practice, with emphasis on obesity-specific communication. Kat has also been active in various roles in the Medical Communications Program at the OVC since 2018, working with veterinary students to refine their communication skills. Currently, Kat is involved in the development and assessment of an educational intervention study for veterinary professionals focused on obesity prevention, treatment, and client communication.

    VetEd 2023 is coming!

In this career Q & A, Paul Wood, a highly experienced and passionate veterinarian, shares his insights and thoughts on the importance of embracing the educational elements of all our roles in the veterinary industry. With his extensive background as a farm clinician and his current role as the Programme Director for the BVSci veterinary degree at SRUC Aberdeen, Paul has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in veterinary education and training.

During the talk, Paul encourages attendees to come to the VetEd conference, which is a valuable event for veterinarians to learn and share their knowledge with colleagues from all over the world. We discuss how the conference offers opportunities for veterinarians to network, discover new research, and learn about innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

As someone who has always enjoyed teaching and supporting staff throughout his career, Paul’s passion for mentoring and supporting students is reflected in his part-time PhD research, which is focused on preparing veterinary students for the various transitions in their training.

Overall, this career talk with Paul Wood is an informative and inspiring session, as he shares his extensive experience and encourages veterinarians to embrace the educational elements of their roles and to continue learning and growing throughout their careers

    About Paul:

I graduated from the RVC in 2005 and then spent time working in various clinics across the whole range of species. I then completed an MSc in Wild Animal Health before joing the RVC as a farm clinician. Throughout my career as a vet I have always enjoyed teaching students and supporting staff, so after 14 years working as a clinical farm vet across 3 universities (and a brief foray into industry) I took the decision to step completely into an academic role at R(D)SVS. I have recently joined the new team at SRUC Aberdeen as Programme Director for the BVSci veterinary degree and am relishing the opportunity to join this enterprise at the start. My passion in teaching, support and mentoring is echoed in the topic of my part time PhD looking at preparing veterinary students for the various transitions in their training. I am also excited to be part of the VetEd2023 organising committee as VetEd is a conference that I have always highly valued and enjoyed.

And now for something a little different...

What thoughts does being a poultry vet conjure up? Then watch this session, because it’s going to change your perspectives a little and if nothing else, it’s a spirited discussion!

If you’re bored and done with calving cows, frustrated by short consults in small animal work that don’t allow you to build lasting client relationships or even if you really fancy being part of the most dynamic and progressive sector in UK farming, then watch back this session.

Margaret Hardy, Nathan Hiom and Charlotte Cole from the independent St David’s Poultry Team chat to Adrian as we explore the realities of being a poultry vet and talk about the roles they have available in Herefordshire, North Yorkshire and Co Monaghan in Ireland.

We explore a day in the life of a poultry vet, what a ‘dynamic and progressive farming sector’ means, how the team at St Davids manage their people, business and customers nationwide and what a career in poultry practice could lead to. And in Margaret’s case, an MBE for services to the poultry industry as a key influencer position in Brexit for Northern Ireland.

    About the Team:

    Margaret Hardy BVetMed MRCVS

Margaret is a Director of St David’s Poultry Team and responsible for our team and customers in Northern Ireland.

Margaret graduated from The Royal Veterinary College London in 1988, immediately followed by 15 years in mixed practice. Having been based in the centre of Northern Ireland’s chicken producing region, she developed an interest in poultry and completed a diploma in Poultry Science at the Scottish Agricultural College.

In 2004, Margaret established a poultry practice in Northern Ireland which cared for all bird species, subsequently joining St David’s Poultry Team in 2009. Margaret is currently responsible for the health and welfare of birds for a large Irish food producer and has therefore gained in depth experience with grandparent and parent stock birds.

She is a representative for the breeder, meat and layer sectors of the Northern Ireland industry, on the advisory groups which liaise with the government on disease, welfare and contingency planning issues.

Margaret has also been instrumental in the inclusion and design of poultry specific education within University College Dublin, also helping to deliver this to the wider industry.

In 2022, Margaret was awarded an MBE for her services to the Northern Ireland poultry industry.

    Charlotte Cole BVSc MRCVS

Charlotte joined St David’s in 2019 after graduating from The University of Liverpool. She manages our North Yorkshire practice and works with producers – broilers, layers and turkeys – throughout the area.

Charlotte has a keen interest in broilers and enjoys working with farmers, using the tools and techniques available to optimise their working practices, to produce good quality birds in the most efficient way possible. She also enjoys being able to build long-term relationships with the clients she works with, in order to achieve this.

Charlotte is currently undertaking a postgraduate certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (CertAVP), specialising in poultry, and was named ‘Young Poultry Vet’ at 2022’s National Egg and Poultry Awards.

    Nathan Hiom BVSc MRCVS

Nathan graduated from The University of Liverpool in Veterinary Medicine in July 2020, completing a number of placements with the St David’s Poultry Team during his final 2 years, which developed his interest in poultry medicine.

Attracted by the progressive and forward-thinking approach of the organisation and industry, Nathan subsequently joined St David’s as an intern in September 2020, before moving to the Cotswolds office in March 2021, as a full-time member of the team.

Within poultry, his particular interest lies in optimising the health and welfare of broilers.

Nathan also manages our EMS placement programme, working closely with those who join us to experience the many aspects of this varied sector.
